About

I see myself as a conduit, finding or making openings that eventually spark enough enthusiasm in others to involve themselves, making these projects their own or developing offspring. My passion for artists initiatives in Rotterdam is an evident thread throughout the realized projects listed below.

About the Initiative/Unrealized section these are ambitious projects based in public space that have never left the drawing table but not my thoughts.

PZI Bke Tours [+]

This initiative was sparked by my experience as a young adult who moved quite often into places unfamiliar. Basically it took me two-three years before I could make the new city my own. Students at the Piet Zwart Institute study for two years. I wanted to give them a jump start and show them the smaller less known but equally inspiring venues outside the cities centre. These tours lead to students working as volunteers in a range of places we visited which sometimes lead to paid positions. But what gives me the most pleasure now, are how many alumni have stayed in the city and started their own initiatives or galleries continually adding to the cultural fabric of Rotterdam.

Final Report [+]

Ruimte Bezetten/Occupying Space was a large and long-term project. The City Hall in Rotterdam was occupied by a group of about 200 artists one-year long during it’s reign as Cultural Capitol of Europe 2001. Ruimte Bezetten started one year before the actual occupation on the initiative of Leslie Robbins, with talks between representatives of Rotterdam 2001 and the Artists' Initiatives about how to bundle artists' initiative and be able to show it.

Complete final report (in Dutch).

I was peeved at Rotterdam’s decision and thought if ‘the artwork is in the way,’ then why not solve the problem by creating an artwork that would not be in the way. And, I did just that.
